Art at King Ecgbert School

At KS3 students are taught in form groups in Year 7 to 8 and then in smaller mixed groups in Year 9. Students are given the opportunity to work in a variety of media throughout this key stage including, drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramic work, batik and block printing. Students work on study sheets in class and have Sketchbooks to develop independent learning at home. This is based around structured homework activities that tie into the students current projects. Projects include work around different cultures, artists and techniques. All the projects are designed to build student confidence in skills, ideas and creativity.

GCSE Art

GCSE (Art and Design) is taught at KS4 following the AQA specification. Two units are carried out for the duration of the coursework and are worth 60% of the qualification, the final exam is a 10 hour practical exam with a 10 week preparatory period in which the students must fulfil the four assessment objectives. This is worth 40%. The coursework centres around two gallery visits. The first is to London where we visit the V&A and the National Gallery and the second visit is to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

 Sixth Form Art

At KS5 we offer an AS or full A level in Art and Design AQA. In Y12 students following the AS course receive 5 x one hour lessons, the same arrangement operates at Year 13. AS level involves two units of coursework one of which includes a 10 hour practical exam and A Level involves two units of coursework and a practical exam of 15 hours.

The course is enriched with a wide range of mediums that are studied during a programme of workshops. This is enhanced further by Gallery visits giving the students a broad experience of Art and Design. Students are encouraged to develop confidence in skills, ideas and creativity.
