Information about Pupil Premium for parents and carers

The pupil premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.  It is for the school to decide how the pupil premium funding allocated to the school is spent, however schools are held accountable for its use and publish details of this money.

King Ecgbert School is committed to investing the pupil premium fund effectively to provide opportunities for our students to thrive in our school, enjoy their learning experiences and maximise their progress whatever their starting point.

If your child is registered to receive free school meals then your child can purchase breakfast before school and a main meal in the dining room at lunchtime each day, saving over £500 per child per year.

Do you qualify for Free School Meals?

If you have a child attending a Sheffield school or maintained nursery, you may be entitled to free school meals if you receive any of these benefits:

• Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods) 
• Income Support
• Income based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Income related Employment Support Allowance
• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
• Child Tax Credit as long as you have a yearly household income of less than £16,190 (as assessed by HM Revenue and Customs) and do not get Working Tax Credit
• Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

If you are over 18 and still attend school your free school meals will continue.

Free breakfast for students who receive Free School Meals.

We give a free breakfast to all students who get a free school meal. Students who have a good breakfast find it easier to concentrate and to do well at school. It may also help your child’s punctuality and success in lessons. Students can choose from our breakfast menu to the value of £1.00 a day. There are hot drinks like hot chocolate, waffles or pastries, hot sandwiches (sausage/bacon/Halal chicken sausage), cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit available. At the till, students use just give their name to the cashier.

Cost of trips, uniforms and equipment

We do not want financial hardship to be a barrier to any child’s progress in lessons or participation in extra-curricular activities. Therefore the school uses its pupil premium funds to pay for the following:

• Revision guides for GCSE subjects – they will be given out by teachers

• Art and DT equipment for GCSE students – this will be provided by their teachers

• Maths calculators - students can speak to their maths teachers or year manager

• Music lessons – free to Pupil Premium students, please see below for more detail

• Uniform, including PE kit - please contact your child’s year manager for help and look out for our pre-loved uniform events

• Curriculum trips (as part of the subject) – any contribution is voluntary

• We also support with the cost of residential trips which are running again (e.g. trips abroad) – please discuss with the trip’s organiser how much you can contribute

Music lessons

As well as being very enjoyable, learning a musical instrument is proven to help students with their well-being as well as academic results. We encourage all Pupil Premium students to learn a musical instrument of their choice. Instrument hire and lessons are paid for by the school for all Pupil Premium students; lessons take place during the school day in our music rooms. At the moment, we have good availability to learn wind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone) and brass instruments (trumpet, tenor horn, trombone). Please be aware there is currently a half term waiting list for piano, guitar, drums, vocal (singing) and strings (cello, violin, viola).
